French melon prices also decreasing

"EU: "Melon prices distressingly low"

The Spanish melon season should be in full swing at the moment. This is not the case, much to the regret of the importers. "All we need now is good weather" according to Dutch a trader. "The Pentecost week-end was nice. Then we had sunshine for a few days, but that is unfortunately over."

The season in Almeria is just about over and the volumes from Murcia are taking its place. "Last week it was especially difficult for the Galia," he mentions. "There was a lot in the market. At the moment this is a little less, but still the demand is not good compared to the volumes. Prices are distressing. Last week a box of Galias fetched 2 Euro. Now it is slightly better at 2.50 Euro, but that is still far too low."

According to him it is a fact, that less volumes from Murcia are available. "But somehow or other this is always supplemented from another source. Now for instance more Cantaloupe melons come from France. Prices for the French ones were at a good level last week, but I note that these also are decreasing. I hope there will be quite a bit more sunshine in the coming weeks!"

Also other summer fruit is not doing so well, according to the trader. "For instance
top fruit is not doing well at all. Especially peaches are selling less. That is actually the tendency of the last few years. All the time there is a bigger demand for nectarines and less for peaches.
