Italy: Drop in production not enough to boost prices Sicilian citrus fruits

C.A.I., cooperative society situated in Furci Siculo in the area of Messina, Sicily, is specialized in the production and trade of traditional and organic citrus fruits.

“This year yield is 26% lower than in 2011, but this has not affected prices,” the company managers say.

In January and February prices were 5% lower than the same period of last year. Furthermore, from March to mid May prices fell heavily by 10-12%.

During the winter season, competition with foreign products (above all Spain) was intense.

“Our main trading markets are Italy, Germany, Denmark, France and Great Britain.”
