Jaap Wiskerke:

"Netherlands: "Noticeably large price differences in new onions on the European market"

Dutch onion exporters are currently feeling pressure during the transition from the old to the new harvest. "We are finished with the old onions and are busy with the new harvest," says Jaap Wiskerke van Wiskerke Onions. "The price differences within the European market are noticeably large. In Austria the price is at 24 cent and the German customers pay fifty cents. In general the demand is pretty calm and the market is not really jumping."

"We need a dry spell and then more of the product will become available. There is currently a heat wave in the United States. It is pretty common that we will get the same weather around three weeks later and then the market will look very different," says Jaap. "It is still too early to talk about expectations for the new season, but what we do know is that the profit is 10-15% lower. This not only true for the Netherlands, but also for the rest of the world."
