Pakistan: Mango exports slow

Mango exports don't seem to be going as planned this season, with indications being that the country will not achieve its target of 200,000 tonnes.

The slow pace of the trade will mean financial hardship for the growers and also, for the national economy, which benefits immensely from the supply of foreign currency.

Many mango exporters are blaming the Ministry of Commerce for the slow trade, saying that they are not giving attention to issues that would improve things for the sector.

Abdul Wahid, former Chairman All Pakistan Vegetable and fruit Exporters Association said unnecessary bureaucratic hassles and delaying tactics used by the Custom officials at Karachi Port and Anti-Narcotic force to prolong export process caused rusting of the export consignments destined for different destinations.

Wahid said that exporters should be offered tax relief from the government in compensation for their losses.

"If the government fails to respond to the major problems of the mango exporters, the national exchequer is likely to be the ultimate loser in terms of huge foreign revenue during the next season as every year it earns massive foreign revenue through mango fruit export," he added.

He says the government takes no notice of the proposals of exporters to improve the industry, such as quality ad grading standards and subsidies on airfreight for exporters.
