Truffle cultivation also possible in Germany
Truffles: most of these fungi originate from France, Italy and Spain. But Germany could also become a truffle country. Researchers discovered that there are even species here that they though extinct.
Scientists of the university of Freiburg say that climate changes have made the possibility of making Germany a truffle country grow. Recently they showed which varieties of the culinary specialty can be found where, by way of research. Using trained truffle dogs the team seven different varieties of truffles in 121 places in Baden-Württemberg.
According to the research truffle are only found in area with a chalky ground and they prefer areas with deciduous trees, such as oaks, beeches and hazelnut trees. The summer truffle (Tuber aestivum), a culinary high quality black truffle, which can bring up up to 600 Euro per kilo on international market, is on the list of species on the brink of extinction. The researchers found this variety at 116 places in Germany. Two other varieties which were thought to be extinct, the black truffles Tuber mesentericum and Tuber macrosporum, were reportedly found by the researchers in Germany.
