Bangladesh: Fresh produce exports prohibited for Ramadan
The items banned are green chilli, aubergine, onion and garlic and they will remain unavailable for export until the end of August.
The demand for these items traditionally rises during the month of Ramadan, which is set to begin in the third week of July.
"We imposed the ban to increase supply to meet the increased demand during Ramadan," Commerce Minister Ghulam Muhammed Quader said.
The ban came after calls from the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce, in order to prevent prices spiralling.
The apex trade body earlier demanded bar on exports of potato and cucumber along with the four vegetables.
The vegetables that have been prohibited for exports would usually be sent to market in the Middle East and Europe, targeting immigrant communities and migrant workers.
