Russian melon harvest increased 6 fold

More than three thousand tons of watermelons and honeydew melons were harvested in the Astrakhan area. The regional representative of the Ministry of Agriculture, Elena Berebitskaya reported on Wednesday, that harvest increased 6 fold compared to last year.

According to the manufacturers, early ripening and the favourable hot weather from mid-spring caused this increase.

According Berebitskaya, "On July 2nd the farming provinces harvested and sold 3036 tons of melon, compared to only 470 tons last year."

"The area is almost the same, but the weather conditions this year had a significant beneficial impact, so the watermelons ripened much earlier, not early July but mid June."
