Chinese Garlic in short supply due to bad weather

Following low garlic prices in 2011 many growers decreased their acreage, in addition to this continual bad weather in the main growing region of Jinxian County has lead to a decrease in volume of 20-30% to 3,200,000 tons.

Vivien Li from Hengfeng Fresh Produce said that prices this season will be around 800 USD/t higher than last season.

According to Adrian Liu, Jinxian Hi Garlics, sizes are also small this season with only 5-10% bigger than 6cm and bulbs bigger than 6.5 are few and far between.

There is also talk of speculators buying up the new season garlic in order to drive up prices, this is unconfirmed and the main cause for the high prices seems to be the shorter crop.
