Geert Vilez, Demargo:

Belgium: “France important consumer of young leek”

Young leek is on the market again and Demagro has already sold the first of them. “From Monday, an amount of 50 tons of leek was available in ten-kilogram packages. Right now we mainly deliver to France. In order to enter the French market it was necessary for the prices to drop, as the French leek is 30 euro cents cheaper. Currently (4 July), the average price is 65 euro cents per kilogram,” according to Geert Vilez.

He says there is presently no transport to the Eastern Bloc. “In the next couple of days we imagine that the volumes will increase. However, expectations are that there won’t be any demand for Belgian leek until the end of the year, since there is enough leek production in Poland. We can’t speak of export yet, unless some special weather conditions occur.”
