Tomatoes are Germany's favorite vegetable

The average German eats around 10 kg of tomatoes each year. This is what has made the tomato Germany's favourite type of vegetable. An average of 600,000 tons of tomatoes are sold in Germany per year, reports the press agency for German fruit and vegetables.

In 2011 around 320 hectares of tomatoes were grown in greenhouses. The largest acreage, 70 hectares, was located in Baden-Württemberg. Germans prefer especially aromatic vine tomatoes. Sweet and juicy cherry tomatoes are in at second place. Tomatoes are especially popular in the warmer months. This type of vegetable is purchased throughout the year, but sales quantities in the second and third quarter increases by 30%.

Tomatoes are cultivated outside in Germany from July through October. Tomatoes are not only delicious, but are also healthy. They contain a lot of vitamin C, minerals and are low in calories. The carotenoids in tomatoes help prevent illness," shares the press bureau for German fruit and vegetables.
