Netherlands: Ahold opens up bol.com

Ahold has announced a major shift in strategy for bol.com, the online retail site that it acquired earlier this year, saying it will now allow function as an open marketplace. The move is the first major indication of Ahold’s plans for its online activities, which it has earlier said it will look to focus on.

In the statement, Ahold said that it will allow any business or retailer which has a VAT number and is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce, to sell their products via bol.com, giving them access to 3.5 million customers. Bol.com will also include items offered by other retailers that it already sells on its website.

Ahold admitted that allowing third-party sites will give the site’s customers greater choice in terms of range, availability, service, and value. The company expects other retailers to add 25,000 items to its product offering within a few months.

It noted: "Our aim is to give customers the widest possible choice at all times, both in terms of range in all our specialist stores, and in terms of value, availability, and swift delivery. From today, customers will find specialist product ranges that weren't previously available at bol.com."
