Mango production in Axarquía will reach avocado's in four years

Spain: Trops to double mango production this season

Trops cooperative from Vélez Málaga, estimates that, for this season, it will double the mango production, going from 4,000 tons to about 9,000 tons, with a turnover of about 14 million Euro, double of last year.

According to Trops manager, Enrique Colilles, in the "IX Technical Journeys for Mango and Avocado", celebrated yesterday in the Palace of Beniel de Vélez Málaga. The increase is due to weather conditions and the new plantations that just started. The campaign for this fruit starts at the end of July, the strongest months being September and October, ending in November.

"Moreover, thanks to new facilities, we will triple our production volume," according to Colilles, who underlined that Axarquía is making avocado and mango seasonal products, "since our quality is superior to any other country."

"Mango produced here is of superior quality when compared to the ones from other areas of the world and it's quite profitable for farmers. It's a quite satisfying sector in these hard times," he said.

Regarding avocado, the numbers are similar to the ones in other campaigns, with a production around 12,000 tons, allowing a turnover of about 24 million Euro, according to this manager's estimations.
