US (WA): Blueberries hit peak volume

Good growing conditions in spring are paying dividends in Washington as growers enter the heart of blueberry harvesting season.

"Overall, the spring growing season in Washington has been excellent," said Suzanne Wolter, director of marketing for Rainier Fruit Company. Rainier, which ships their berries throughout the United States and major markets along central and eastern Canada, grows their berries on about 500 acres along the Columbia River. The favorable spring has made for good quality, added Wolter.

"Fruit quality is fantastic, and we are into peak volume of blueberries now," she said. Harvesting is expected to continue through the next four weeks.
