UK: Steady tomato market

The tomato trade in the UK is stable at the moment according David Shepherd from Evesham Vale Growers. "Low light levels are keeping production steady and demand is OK, with sales on a normal level."

Demand had been high during the Jubilee celebrations and also in the week prior because of high temperatures. David admits that if demand suddenly increased it would be a struggle to supply enough.

He sees the trend for high end specifications increasing, which he puts down to the people treating themselves a bit more at home rather that eating out, due to the economy. The piccolo cherry tomato also a very popular variety.

Prices seem to be up year on year, but this also a consequence of last year's Ecoli issues which forces price cuts and big promotions.
