Germany: Brandenburg expect more cherries

Fruit cultivation companies in the German federal state of Brandenburg hope for a better cherry harvest in 2012 than in the two previous years, but also know that the harvest despite that may not be satisfying, as mentioned on website proplanta.de.

According to provisional estimates a harvest of 2,390 kgs/HA of sweet cherries and for morella's a harvest of 3,280 kgs/HA. According to information of the bureau of statistics Berlin-Brandenburg the present estimate of the total harvest of sweet cherries is about 1,200 tons. That total would be 800 tons more than last year. This total, however, is still 200 tons less than the average over the years 2006 to 2011. The causes of the still disappointing harvest expectations are mainly late frost and hail damage. Also the rain of last week may have a negative influence on the harvest yield regionally.
