European pear growers want more promotion

The international pear congress that was held this year in LĂ©rida, ended on the 15th of June. There were 150 participants from the most important regions in pear production in Europe. There were also representatives present from Argentina and South Africa.

It was the fifth time that AREFLH and AFRUCAT held a congress like this. The central theme this year was 'production techniques'. They also spoke about pitching new openings in the market. Due to an all round decrease of fruit consumption in Europe and a weaker competition position the pear market has weakened in recent years. This is why it's important, in Europe and new markets, to develop promotion strategies, which will make the production more dynamic on all levels and ensure a profitable income for all producers.

Trentini, vice president of the AREFLH, indicated that the season may be difficult again this year for pear producers, due to a production shortage. INTERPERA announced that a treaty between various production companies and the creation of a collaboration, thanks to the specialisation of these companies in one or two pear varieties, can soften the competition on the market.

Next year the congress will further expand its horizon as it will then take place in Argentina. The pear production here is at fourth place in the world, after China, the US and Italy.
