Colombia: Production of MD2 pineapple growing

Although Colombia is not the largest producer of pineapple MD2, also known as Gold Pineapple, due to its climate and soil conditions, its production is expanding more and more in different parts of the country. Quindio, the coast of Urabá Antioquia and Tolima, are three of the Colombian producing areas that are in the expansion stage.

Agrofuturo is one of the Colombian companies expanding their gold pineapple crops in the Urabá region of Antioquia while Agropecuaria El Zafiro increases production in Quindio.

Tolima is characterized by the production of rice, but due to the FTA with the United States, rice farmers in Colombia are concerned with the volume of rice that can enter the country from the United States, so they have begun to see the pineapple as a good option.

Today, pineapples are sold between 950 to 1.150 Colombian pesos the Kilo. Twenty days ago, the price had fallen to 600 Colombian pesos per Kilo, but has since recovered and producers´ expectations are that it will maintain the price or increase a bit more. For now, producers are dedicated to expanding their crops and prepare to provide their product both in the domestic market and the international ones.
