Germany: 75% of all Elstar sold in 2 kg.carry bags

In the Northern German cultivation area of the Lower Elbe more than three quarters of all Elstar apples are sold in plastic bags of 2 kgs. Especially older consumers of 50 years of age and older buy Elstar, as is clear from figures of AMI and GfK. Almost 70% of all Elstar is bought by people of this age group. Younger buyers prefer Gala, Braeburn or club varieties such as Pink Lady.

Between 2005 and 2010 the consumption of apples in Germany decreased to
17 kgs.per person per annum (excluding apple sauce and juice). Pink Lady is the only variety of which consumption increased (+8.9%) in this period. The consumption of Elstar remained stable (+0.1%). The consumption of Jonagold decreased (-8.8%) as is clear from the figures of AMI.
