"We were not harmed by the first tremor on 20th May",export manager at Fruit Modena Group, Giuseppe Scarfone says, "However, we could do nothing against the second tremor on 29th May which made part of the roof of our warehouse in Sorbara di Bomporto collapse (in the two pictures below). The warehouse is for the stocking of empty packaging. Luckily there were no workers in when the roof collapsed".
In the pcitures: part of the warehouse's roof collapsed in Sorbara di Bomporto, seen from two different positions.
Following tremors did not damage anything else. FMG estimates limited damages in an area which is distant from the main storehouse where products are kept and processed. This damage could be considered insignificant compared to that experienced by others in the area.
On the left it is clear that a girder slipped from its pillar and now tumbledown is put on below pallets.
"A lot of structures in the fruit and vegetable sector," Giuseppe continues, "were seriously damaged and the new season risks to be affected by that."
In this unexpected situation, FMG helped several dairies of "Parmigiano Reggiano" cheese by offering their cold stores to keep their damaged cheese shapes that could not be kept after their warehouses collapsed.
"New fair cooperation may start between FMG and other affected companies", says Giuseppe Scarfone.
"Irrigation and drainage systems, which were damaged by the earthquake, have been repaired by qualified technical staff and now they work well and should guarantee an efficient service to all the producers in the area".
Works to put in safety and recover the damaged part of the warehouse.
FMG, as all the companies in the earthquake area, is taking safety measures in its warehouses, as required by law. Girders and pillars will be anchored, which wil ensure durability, but will be expensive"
In the meantime, a construction company has already started to put in the new safety measures in the damaged warehouses (picture above) and the plant in Sorbara might be working by the first days of July 2012.
"In this way there will not be problems to face the campaign 2012/13 which is about to start," Giuseppe Scarfone ends.
