Restaurant critic Jay Rayner is to speak at the popular East Midlands Potato Day to be held at QV Foods, Holbeach Hurn, on July 5. In addition there will be practical in-field workshops on topics such as herbicides, slugs, PCN, soils and water.
The event will be opened by Potato Council chairman Allan Stevenson, who will be at the event all day to speak with growers and members of the supply chain.
Well known influential journalist, writer and broadcaster, Jay Rayner, will examine the relationship between supermarkets and their suppliers, and Potato Council’s head of marketing and corporate affairs, Caroline Evans, will present the latest plans for raising consumer awareness of the benefits of potatoes. The strong morning line up will conclude with Mark Pettigrew, agricultural sustainability manager at PepsiCo, who will be speaking to delegates about supply chain sustainability
Technical in-field workshops will take place in the afternoon and delegates will be able to speak directly with researchers about their specific issues. Growers will be able to choose to attend four out of a total of the five topics covered at the event.
Mark Stalham (Cambridge University Farm) will be discussing the latest developments from his work on soil cultivations, and Tim Hess (Cranfield University) will be speaking about water use efficiency.
Managing PCN can be difficult especially once land is infested. Simon Woods (Harper Adams University College) will be demonstrating best practice nematicide incorporation as part of an integrated approach. In addition, John Keer, (Richard Austin Agriculture), will be discussing varietal sensitivity to post-emergence herbicides, showing plots based on larger on-site replicated trials.
The best practice use of Metaldehyde for slug control will be covered by Simon McMunn from the Metaldehyde Stewardship Group. Potato Council’s Chris Steele will also be on hand to answer wider questions on slug control.
