Spain: The value of fruit and vegetables exports grow 6.4% until April
Between January and April, horticultural companies in Almería made 16,000 commercial operations in foreign markets, where 868,723 tons of fruits and vegetables were sent. An amount that means a 1.1% drop regarding the same period of last year. On the other hand, the value of these exports registers a 6.36% increase, as the turnover was 849.2 million Euro, against the 840.79 from the last season. This according to data from the Provincial Delegation of Agriculture and Fishing on Icex's last info.
With the sale value for vegetables (881.84 million Euro), Almería restrengthens the first place in the Spanish "ranking", with 45.2%, twenty points more than Murcia, that takes the second place. In third place is Valencia, with 6.8% of the national totals.
Tomato and pepper
One in every 4 Euro earned by the Almería province in the external markets is from tomatoes. With 272.6 million Euro, tomato represents 25% of the export value in the first four months of the year. Some 22.8% (248.2 million Euro) correspond to pepper, while cucumber has a 11.7% quota.
On the other hand, Germany keeps being faithful to horticultural products from Almería. Until April, they acquired fresh vegetables valued at 251.3 million (25.6%). France takes the second place with a 14.1% share of vegetables and 23.4% in fruits. The Netherlands, United Kingdom, Italy and Poland are also among the main clients in the European Union. Outside EU, main clients are Switzerland (1.7%), Russia (0.5%), Canada and the US (0.2%).
Imports
In the first four months of the year, companies in Almeria imported fresh vegetables by a value of 17.39 million Euro, some 20% more than in the same period of 2011. With this information, the external commercial balance is of 864.4 million Euro. 83% of the vegetables bought abroad by Almería come from Morocco, while 11.2% come from France.
Regarding fruits, Almería imported 2.5 million Euro of fruit, some 120% more than in the last exercise, with a positive balance of almost 10 million Euro for Almería. Regarding value, Senegal is the main supplier, with almost 58% and Morocco is the second with 19.5%.
