2012 season under way

Poland: Raspberry acreage on the increase

In Poland the fresh raspberry season is getting under way. The raspberry season started in week 25 and finishes in week 39. Typically the following varieties are offered: Glen Ample, Polka, Polana. As for packaging, plastic punnets 125g, 250g with absorbing lid in are proposed.

Unlike the strawberry production the raspberries have not been affected by the extreme cold, earlier in the year, infact growing conditions have been quite good.

The fruits are Globalgap and BRC certificated, which meets the supply requirements of most major Western European retailers. According to Jan Nowakowski from Genesis Fresh, the prices are more competitive than those offered by Belgian and The Dutch producers.

In recent years, the production of raspberries in Poland increased from 2005 to 2011, from 17,500 ha to 20,500 ha and production volume 65,000 tons to 84,000 tons.
Most of the products are distributed for industrial purposes, namely, for juice and freezing. Polish processed raspberries are well-known in Eastern and Western countries, as Poland is one of the leading counties in the production of raspberries. The fruit intended for fresh consumption are grown on open fields and also under plastic tunnels.
