Berry cultivation in Peru totals 822 hectares

Berry cultivation in Peru covers 822 hectares, from which 720 correspond to cherries, 32 to raspberry and 70 to blackberry, according to information provided today by Sierra Exportadora.

The pioneer companies in this cultivation are AgrĂcola La Joyita, Camposol, Athos, Intipa Flower, Agropaine Fruit Trading, Silvateam PerĂș and Valle y Pampa.

The international consultant by Sierra Exportadora, Felipe Rosas, affirmed that Peru can and must, due to demand of the international markets, develop its berry production. Peru must plan concrete objectives such as reaching 3,000 hectares of blackberry.

Rosas is in Peru to participate in regional seminars in Cajamarca, Chiclayo (Lambayeque), Trujillo (La Libertad) and Ancash. This Friday he will be at the Berry Magistrate Conference to talk about markets, technical aspects and turnover for berries in the country.

He explained that, in Chile, 12,000 hectares of harvested blackberries produce around 8 kilos per hectare.

He considered that Peru must get its production into the market when the Northern Hemisphere (the United States, Europe and Asia) don't have fruit.

Sierra Exportadora organized the exhibition round for the consultant as part of a program "Peru Berries" that has as an objective to boost the cultivation of those fruits in the Andes area of the country.

Sierra Exportadora wants to implement demonstrative parcels of berries around the whole Andes area to promote its cultivation.
