Promotion Dutch onions in Brazil

The Dutch onion sector presents itself during the next few weeks at the Sial in Sao Paulo in Brazil. From 25 to 28 June one of the largest food fairs of the region takes place. The Dutch onion sector, which annually exports more than a million tons of onions worldwide, want to obtain with its presence a stronger foothold in Latin America.

Dutch onions are different in many ways. Because of the high dry matter content, as a result of the long days and the calcium rich soil, it is possible to store the onions for long periods. Because of this a product can be supplied worldwide whenever required by the buyer. With the Rotterdam, Antwerp and Vlissengen ports close by, last year alone more than one million tons of onions were exported.

The onion export to Brazil and other Latin American countries considerably increased over the past period. More than 1,500,000 kgs. of onions was exported weekly to Brazil. At the moment the Brazilian market is No: 3 after Libya and the United Kingdom. Possible reason for this is, apart from availability of transport facilities (containers), the present rate of exchange of the euro. The annual turnover to Brazil is about 2.7 million Euro.

Brazil as one of the BRIC countries has a healthy economy. Large retailers in Brazil are: Wal Mart, Carrefour and Pão de Açúcar and Dia. The vegetable segment in the Brazilian retail grew by 11% in 2010. This is especially the result of the increasing demand from lower income groups for fresh vegetables on the retail shelves. The company Cia Brasileira de Distribuição SA is market leader when buying vegetables with a market share of 10%.

Sial Sao Paulo
GroentenFruit Bureau will, as instructed by the Dutch onion trade, have a stand at the food fair in Sao Paulo, stand number 090 lane F. The knowledge and assessment centre for and on behalf of the Dutch vegetable sector promote with specific campaigns the image locally and abroad and the consumption of fruit and vegetables.
