US (CO): Warm growing season for onions

With the onion harvest in Colorado about a month away, warm weather has been the norm.

“There have been above-normal temperatures and it's been dry,” said Charles Grasmick, an onion grower in Granada, Colorado. Parts of last year's crop were affected by a drought, but Grasmick doesn't think the warm weather will get severe enough to affect this season's onions. The effects of last year, however, will bleed into this season.

“Planted acreage is down in Colorado this year, and that's partly due to a drought last year,” he said. He estimated that acreage this year will be down by roughly 30 percent compared to last year.

Harvest is slated to begin next month and will continue through October.
