Vietnam: Chinese apples flood city markets

The managing board of the fruit wholesale market in Thu Duc said Chinese fruit, mostly apples and pears, account for 10 percent of the products transported to the market since the beginning of this year.

Wholesalers said Chinese fruit usually does not undergo any quarantine tests prior to their import.

Meanwhile, Luong Hong Thanh, a representative for Thu Duc wholesale market, said imported fruit only needs valid certificates from customs agencies to be allowed to enter the market without any quality or quarantine tests.

In small markets, Chinese apples and pears are sold rampantly. At Thi Nghe market in Binh Thanh District, Chinese apples are sold at VND40,000 – 45,000 a kg.

“I sell some 20 – 30 kg of Chinese apples on a daily basis,” said Huu Toan, a small trader in Hoang Hoa Tham market in Tan Binh District.

“Consumers usually buy the fruit for presents or worship offerings.”
