Spain: Almanzor F1 melon, Nunhems new variety

More than 180 farmers and horticultural companies participated in the Conference of Melon Fields, organized on 8 of June by Nunhems. The objective of this meeting was to get to know the new melon variety Almanzor F1*, a Piel de Sapo characterized by an original taste and texture, and also because it adapts perfectly to the production in the province of Almería.

This event, in Agra, allowed farmers, technicians and companies producing and selling melon Piel de Sapo, to get to know "on site" the characteristics and behavior of Almanzor F1*.

Melon Almanzor F1*
According to the explanations of Mercedes Fernández Lozano, specialist in Nunhems with melon and watermelon, Almanzor F1*, "is a new variety, different in aspect, with great internal quality, exceptional size and high conservation post-harvest. Moreover, it presents a maturity in caramel tones, is quite attractive visually and with a sugar level between 13 and 14 Brix degrees, while in other varieties it is only between 10 and 11".

Moreover, Fernández Lozano also pointed out that, "we believe that this new variety is going to be a true revolution in the melon sector, as apart from its sweetness it's also characterized by an average weight between 3 and 3.5 kilos, more fit for the market demand that doesn't look for big sizes any more".

Powdery mildew resistant

“This new variety presents longitudinal stripes, has a medium - late production cycle and transplanting takes place in mid February. As a novelty and differentiation factor, this melon is resistant to powdery mildew that is active during Spring. By being resistant to it", pointed out Fernández Lozano.

"Many years ago, it was unthinkable that a piel de sapo like the Almanzor F1*, produced in Murica and Castilla La Mancha, could adapt to the Almería fields. Because of this, it will have great success in the sector in the area," commented the melon specialist at Nunhems.
