Ton de Jong, Fruitmasters:
"Netherlands: "Strawberry cultivation could use some sunshine"
The strawberry market is a little difficult at moment. This as told by Ton de Jong of Fruitmasters, The Netherlands. "The supply has been good all the time, but at the moment the weather is not playing its part. Far too much rain has fallen, whilst strawberries this time of the year need sunshine and that does not improve the quality of the open ground strawberries."
The glasshouse cultivation is finished in the meantime. "The supply of strawberries is not at an enormously high level at the moment, but these days many countries are self-sufficient. Nevertheless we supply together with the Dutch supermarkets also a number of buyers in countries such as France, Russia and Italy."
Prices of strawberries vary significantly depending on the quality offered. "Unfortunately the expected weather conditions are not all that favourable for the strawberries. The strawberry cultivation needs sunshine" Ton concludes.
