Battaglio Italy: Supply of imported fruit in 2012 is more limited than in past
FreshPlaza (FP): What is the relationship between demand and supply?
Battaglio (B): Supply and demand has been balanced till now. Sometimes, imported fruit's supply appeared limited by several factors, i.e. a growing preference by the producers in alternative markets instead of the European one and not so plentiful yields in some productions.
FP: What are product prices in comparison with last year in the same period?
B: In general they are good. However, the Euro is weaker and production costs are higher.
FP: What troubles have there been with the banana market so far?
B: Of course there has been some confusion in the market due to the reset of Del Monte company. However, it seems that a new balance is going to be achieved.
FP: How did the weather affect the quality of the main imported products?
B: Weather did not affect the quality of products but affected their quantity by reducing the supply of products.
FB: What about the quantity you deal with per year?
B: In the last few years, our company has recorded high income. Nowadays, we market 40,000 tons of bananas and about 10,000 tons of pineapples every year. In total we deal with more than 100,000 tons of fruit per year.
