"Kees Heegsma: "Everybody looking hard for early carrots"

Good prices on empty carrot market

The Dutch carrot trade is waiting with bated breath for the first new carrots. "Dutch carrots by the bunch are available, but no loose carrots. The Southern European supply is quickly getting used up. The new carrots are on the way and everybody looks forward to that. I think that next week in Limburg the first early carrots will be lifted," Kees Heegsma from Lemmer, open ground vegetable trader, says.

Harvest in Southern Europe

The old carrots, except some stock at processors, are completely finished. "In this period there is just nothing. The stock from Portugal and Spain is finished. France have early carrots and the whole of Europe is trying to get some. But because of the cold, wet spring growth in France is also disappointing. Normally at the end of May production is in full swing there," says Kees. "Prices are at a high level for the carrot market, at the moment 50/60 cents FOT in the Netherlands and Germany."

Israel as well has sufficient carrots available, but the supply, according to the open ground vegetable trader, is a lot more complicated logistically. "Also in the Pfaltz harvesting has started, but with a harvest of 30/35 tons/HA the available parcels are quickly used up."
