"Cause of disappointing aubergine market not quite clear"

The glasshouse vegetable season has been going for a while and because of the nice weather last week production is in full swing. Prices are not always influenced in a positive way, as may be seen at the moment with tomatoes. Benny Cuypers of Lava mentions that the season for cucumbers, peppers, aubergines and courgettes has run with 'varying' success.

"This of course depends on the product. The cucumber market has been doing rather well right from the start. Nothing much striking has happened. The pepper start was a little more difficult. The real 'prime prices' were omitted. This is also because Spanish and Israeli product was on the market for quite a long period."

"The tomato season started well, but during the last few days it has been more difficult. Prices have decreased quite a lot and that is also the result of the larger production, because of the sunny weather last week. Also the decreasing demand has influence here. In a rather short period prices decreased from 90 to
60 cents/kg.

"With aubergines already from the start of the season prices and demand were disappointing. It is not quite clear what the cause is. The area has not changed compared to last year. Therefore that cannot be the problem. However, right from the start of the season there were rather a lot of Spanish aubergines on the market and volumes of these are still available. Now the Spanish season is almost over. This year export to Russia was also somewhat less. That could be part of the cause of the unfavourable market as well."
