Serenade biofungicide now available for soil disease control in the UK

Serenade biofungicide has been approved for use in the United Kingdom to manage soil diseases in potatoes and other vegetables through soil treatment at planting or transplanting. The product will be applied as a preventative drench against various soil-borne diseases including Rhizoctonia, Streptomyces, and Helminthosporium. In addition to the new soil uses, Serenade ASO is a broad-spectrum fungicide recommended for a wide range of foliar diseases in fruit and vegetable crops. The product is available from BASF in the UK and is available in more than 30 other countries.

The yield above the white line is treated with Serenade SOIL, the yield below is Grower standard treated.

The new in-furrow application of Serenade has been commercially available in a number of crops in the United States, with especially impressive effectiveness on potatoes. When applied directly on the soil, both yield and quality of potatoes have improved, according to Sarah Reiter, vice president of marketing for AgraQuest, Serenade’s manufacturer.

“Based on five years of testing around the globe, we've found that in-furrow application of Serenade increases potato yield by an average of 13 percent,” she said. Part of the reason it works well is the way it protects root crops like potatoes.

“It's especially beneficial for potato growers because Serenade is very effective when used in-furrow,” said Reiter. “It treats the soil and and it creates an armor around the roots.” The fact that it's not a conventional pesticide is also a bonus, she added, but the product's main selling point remains its effectiveness.

“The key thing is the efficacy of the product,” she said. “It's organic, and though it reduces chemical residue levels, that wouldn't mean much if it didn't increase yields. The first thing is yields, and that it's organic on top of that just makes it better.”
