20% of German seed potatoes come from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

"Over a fifth of the German seed potatoes are grown in the North East of Germany in the state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This part of Germany is known for its excellent climate conditions," said Minister of Agriculture, Till Backhaus recently in Güstrow. Here the seed sowing association of the state, which consists of 156 member companies, recently celebrated it's 20th birthday.

All well known German potato growing companies are located in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern according to the minister. In Germany seed potatoes are grown on around 3,600 hectares. The harvest is at 70,000 tonnes.

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern 17,600 hectares is used for growing around 65,000 tonnes of corn seed. Grass seed is grown on 3,400 hectares. According to Backhaus the state uses an area of 27,000 hectares in total for the production of seeding and planting material. More than half of this is supplied to outside the state. A part of it is even exported worldwide.
