German consumer biggest fan of asparagus

The 'white gold' is mostly appreciated in Germany. Of the German consumers 64 percent say they like asparagus very much. Another twenty percent say the vegetable is nice. In the Netherlands and the United Kingdom the asparagus is also appreciated. Of the Dutch consumers, 70% enjoy asparagus very much. In the United Kingdom this percentage is 66. This according to online research of the Productschap Tuinbouw (PT) amongst 553 (D), 530 (NL) and 546 (UK) respondents.
 
The German consumers buy asparagus most frequently during the season; 28% buy them once a week. In the Netherlands and the United Kingdom the share never buying asparagus is rather large. The most important reason not to buy asparagus is that one does not like them.
 
Also the price plays a role. Many consumers find them too expensive. In the Netherlands 27% mention that they did not buy them because of that. Special offers were mostly mentioned as possible actions to increase the consumption of asparagus. For German consumers the quality is more often the reason not to buy (31%).

German and Dutch consumers regard asparagus as a seasonal product in spring. Other associations with asparagus: tasty, spring, season, healthy and delicious. English consumers normally eat green asparagus, not the white ones. For them it is not so important that it is a seasonal product. Also the preparation is more varied. More than 80% of the Dutch and German consumers boil the asparagus. In the United Kingdom the preparation is more varied with stir-fry, steaming and grilling.
