Bas Poeltuyn, Gourmet:

"Good demand for red Egyptian onions"

Shallots and onion grower Gourmet started at the beginning of this month with the supply of red onions from Egypt. "We have already more than ten years of experience with the cultivation and import from Egypt and that is now really paying for itself" Bas Poeltuyn tells. "The Dutch season of red onions of good quality is just about over. The red onions from New-Zealand are normally going to fixed programs and then the Egyptian red onions form a good alternative."

"From the start of the season the demand has been good. The member growers of Gourmet are both GlobalGAP and Nature's Choice certified. They exclusively grow the variety Italian Dark Red. Also drip irrigation was chosen instead of the traditional way. In this way the onions receive the correct amount of water, never too much or too little. Stress in the onion plant and the possibility of sicknesses are limited" Bas explains. "After the harvest the onions are transported in conditioned sea-going containers. To guarantee supermarket quality the onions are again sorted and separated in the Netherlands.''
