NZ: Traveller's bags to be scanned on fruit fly
The call comes almost two weeks after a Queensland fruit fly was found in Auckland. It's believed to have been brought in by a tourist.
Chief executive of Horticulture New Zealand Peter Silcock says border inspection needs to be improved.
"Up until about 18 months ago, the government here had a policy of x-raying 100 per cent of passenger bags and we've moved away from that policy," he said.
"We see it as this focus on creating a domestic-like experience for international travellers and we're lobbying pretty strongly get that 100 per cent x-ray back in place."
