"Sardinia: "Worst prices for vegetable season in years"

Stefano Piras of Sardinian Eredi Piras spoke about his vegetable season which has just concluded. "We ended the harvest of fennel 10 days ago. Now we are growing wheat and transplanting 4 hectares of green melon," Piras said. "In my opinion this vegetable season has been the worst in the last few years in terms of price."

"Compared to the previous season we recorded a 50% drop in price. We did not see increases during the frost in February or for Christmas, New Year and Easter."

Eredi Piras sells its products only in Sardinia because transport costs weigh heavily on revenues. "At the moment our sale markets are local wholesale markets (75%) and Sardinian big retail (25%). We hope to increase the second and reduce the first one."

This year the company began the harvest on 25th September, 2011 and ended it on 10th May, 2012. Volumes were about 500 tons.
