Thailand: Pineapple farmers protest, block road

More than 500 pineapple growers on Wednesday blocked Lampang-Phayao road and demanded the government buy their fruit at four baht a kilogramme.

Reports said the farmers dumped truckloads of the fruit and set up tents on the middle of the road in Lampang's Muang district.

The farmers in the northern province were disgruntled that their pineapples began to spoil because there were no vehicles to deliver the fruit to factories in Prachuap Khiri Khan and other factories in the South.

They initially demanded the government buy their fruit at four baht per kilogramme to alleviate the transportation problem.

Provincial officials asked the pineapple growers to reopen the road first but the request was refused.

The farmers threatened the government to give an answer to the demand before this afternoon or else they will enclose the provincial city hall.

In March, about 4,000 pineapple growers dumped tonnes of pineapples on the Phetkasem Highway in Prachuap Khiri Khan's Muang district await. They called on the government to buy the fruit at four baht a kilogramme to help tackle the falling prices.
