Peruvian fruit and vegetables easier access to EU

Peruvian fruit and vegetables can access the European Union more easily than any other markets due to legislation transparency for such products, according to the representative for the General Direction of Health and Consumers Protection (DG-Sanco) by the European Union, Sara Perucho.

She explained that European norms only require that the exporting country assures that its cultivations don't bring any quarantine plague.

"In Europe, health plan norms for fruit and vegetables are more open than in other countries. This means that it's easier for Peruvian exports to enter here than to other markets," she pointed out.

Last week in Lima a seminar about legislation in the European Union for fruit and vegetables and health plan products concluded, organized by DG-Sanco.

The event had the end result of offering a detailed vision and an explanation about the legislation in the European Union about food and food products to make it easier for exports from third party countries to the European Union.

The role by the authorities and operators from the private sector in assuring the compliance with the requirements for vegetable products was also explained and debated.

In this international seminar, started last Monday 14 May, 50 representatives from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Peru were present.
