Mexico: Great asparagus production in the 2012 season

The 2012 asparagus season in Mexico, which took place between January and March, was very productive. Producers and exporters were taken by surprise by this over production, which was mainly due to the weather. "It was a very warm winter, which unleashed a great production," stated one of the Mexican asparagus exporters.

In 2011, February was very cold and January was freezing. During last year's season temperatures were between -4 and -6 degrees, regulating production. In 2012, unlike 2011, there was no frost and the lowest temperatures at night were 8 and 9 degrees, while in the day, the temperature rose a little more.

Having an excess of production for the same demand, affected the market. As was confirmed by an exporter "the market in 2011 was much better than in 2012."

Referring to the 2013 campaign, exporters claim that "it all depends on the climate" and expect it to behave in the best way possible to have a good season.
