Senegal: Local onion bought for lower prices

National union of manufacturers and traders in Senegal (UNACOIS) has signed an agreement to buy all local onion production. The agreement was made with the onion growers of the international profession with a decrease in price as the goal. In Senegal the onion production is in surplus, but the onions can not be sold because the market is flooded with imported onions which are cheaper.

The agreement was signed under the watchful eye of the Minister of Trade and Industry and Minister of Agriculture and Urban Development, which will monitor the compliance of the cooperation agreement. UNACOIS will not only buy the entire production, but also at the agreed prices, which vary from 0.42 € / kg at the farm to 0.50 € / kg on the market. As stated in the agreement, the onions produced in Niayes and in the valley of the Senegal River are € 0.33 / kg.
