"Increasing consumption with most melon varieties"

"Netherlands: "With Murcia the Galia-season starts for real"

According to Wilko van der Zwaard of Wilko Fruit, the Netherlands, at the moment it is a matter of 'pushing' in the melon market. "We sell them, but it is a little more difficult because of the bad weather. Next week the weather will improve and then consumption will also be a lot better." The trader mentions, that Galia is in short supply on the market. "Prices are good now and are about 7 Euro for 5 kgs."

Quality melons from Murcia

“We are happy that the quality of Galia is first class again at the moment. The last few weeks this was not so good. Probably because of the cold weather in Almeria. In the beginning of June we will receive Galia of super taste. These come from Murcia. We expect a lot from these. Last year it was also a huge success. They are marketed under Gaudias Black label." Wilko Fruit mainly sells melons under its own mark Gaudias. "We notice a big advantage, because this is very good quality. As we serve the top of the market we are in a position to pay the growers a reasonable price."

Every melon has a sticker. The consumer can see what the melon looks like inside. The stickers are made of aluminium and cannot fall off.

The most important development in the melon market is, according to the trader, that more and more is exported from Spain directly. "Originally almost all was sent to the Netherlands, but nowadays they look for their clients themselves. We sell the better part locally and that goes very well."

"Popularity Piel de Sapo increases"

The company has a large variety of melons in its assortment. "Next week de Piel de Sapo arrive again under Gaudias brand. These come from Nijar, later on from Murcia and we close off in Macha in October, the best area for Piel de Sapo. There we have our own grower with these two melon varieties and these are received well by our customers. The brix is a lot higher than other brands and the quality is at its very best." Wilko notices, that the popularity of Piel de Sapo increases year by year. "We sell a lot to our foreign customers and they are very happy with the variety. Sales increase annually by about 50%." Whether the increase in demand has to do with the extra promotion of the retailers? Wilko does not know. "A fact is, however, that the supermarkets find the Piel de Sapo still too expensive and will only buy these when they are 'affordable' for them. Clients at the moment are mainly traditional clients. They must have them."

With the one variety there is an increase in consumption and with another it looks like a decrease. "People would rather not have Galia from Almeria, especially because of the varying quality. But they love those from Murcia. And also the Magenta with a lovely distinctive taste. This variety is a top solution for retailers looking for a tasty and durable melon. At the moment we have Magenta from Morocco and small volume from Almeria and from the 5th of June Murcia will be available again."
