11 companies sign intention agreement for inland navigation connection Maasvlakte-Westland

Considerably less fruit and veg by road thanks to Coolport Westland

On Monday afternoon, 7th of May, an intention agreement was signed between shipowners Stena Line, inland navigation shipping company Danser and 11 agrarian logistic companies from the Westland fruit and vegetable sector in The Netherlands. With the signing on board of the Stena Transit the companies confirmed their intention to move between 10,000 and 15,000 reefer containers annually by inland navigation with Danser to Hoek van Holland. With this a saving of 5,000 tons of CO2 will be achieved and considerably less kilometres driven over asphalt.

The signing is the result of Deelproject 7, Fresh Corridor, an initiative of Frugi Venta in order to promote the multi average fresh transport. The intention agreement was signed by 11 Westland companies: ABC Logistics, ADB Cool Company, Anaco-Greeve, Bud Holland, Cool Chain Group , Cool Control, Fruitpartner, IFFE, LBP Rotterdam, Nature’s Pride and Varekamp Coldstores.

l-r: Ben Maelissa (Danser Group), Mart Valstar (chairman steering committee
Fresh Corridor 7) and Pim de Lange (director Stena Line) sign the
intention agreement

Deelproject 7 will result in Coolport Westland, a transfer terminal in the grounds of Stena Line in Hoek van Holland. The transport of cooling containers from the Maasvlakte will be quicker, more efficient and more sustainable. The reefer containers with fruit and vegetables from the southern hemisphere will be transhipped on Maasvlakte 2 from the large container vessels to smaller inland navigation vessels. Via the inland navigation the containers arrive in Hoek van Holland without a large detour, where they will be put on a trailer and then travel by road only 10 kms to Westland. This saves a minimum of 120 kms per container by road and is more efficient, quicker and mainly more sustainable. At the end of August last year a first successful pilot took place on this route.

In order to facilitate the transhipment from inland navigation to road transport an adjustment to the quay is necessary in the grounds of Stena Line. "We must start making the necessary facilities," Pim de Lange, director of Stena Line tells. "We will start this because Westland is very important to us. We also receive traffic back."

Willem Baljeu

According to Willem Baljeu, former director of Frugi Venta and a member of the steering committee of Fresh Corridor, the project is of major importance in order to strengthen the competitive power of the Dutch fruit and vegetable sector. He explained the position of all Fresh Corridor projects. "On average transport on routes such as these, but also to the Ridderhaven, Waddinxveen, Rivierenland and the Betuwe result in a CO2 reduction of more than 7,000 tons. The total number of lorry kilometres decreases as a result by more than six million. Fresh Corridor has taught us some lessons. Speed is not always a must, it is more important to offload in time. The speed of the modality is acceptable. Participants have understood what is necessary and how quickly. There is agreement between inland navigation and the terminals and transparency has been created in costs and process times. Fresh Corridor is an example for top echelons of government and business.

Sjaak van der Tak

Mayor Sjaak van der Tak was present as well and expressed his appreciation about the initiative of Fresh Corridor. "It is fantastic to see that the theme of sustainabilty receives so much attention from the business sector. My compliments to these entrepreneurs, who see opportunities and seize them!"
