Spain: Asprocan edits a manual to help raise quality of banana

The Association of Banana Producers Organization of the Canary Islands (Asprocan) presented this week the book "Quality and Sustainabilty in the cultivation of banana trees in the Canary Islands", a manual that presents in a easy, applied and direct way every aspect necessary for banana production.

The presentation counted on the presence of the president of Asprocan, Santiago Rodríguez, along with the principal of the University Services, Justo Pérez; the sub-director for Economic Managing in the school, José Antonio Rodríguez; and the coordinator of the book, Carlos Nogueroles.

In his intervention, Santiago Rodríguez showed the main lines in this manual, within the activities already developed by the European project "Biomusa", started in 2009 and ending this year. The project is part of the European program for transnational cooperation MAC 2007-2012, co-financed by the European Fund for Regional Development, in which participating institutions like the Canarian Institute for Agricultural Investigations, the universities of La Laguna and Azores, and the Agriculture Services of Madeira and Asprocan.

Biomusa Project
One of the objectives of the Biomusa projects is informing about the investigation and essays results along with information in general that can be applied to the cultivation and commerce of banana, from the point of view of sustainability.

Santiago Rodríguez pointed out that this books are a tool for the everyday work of technicians in the managing of cultivations. He said that it aspires to bring to the exterior the adaptation process to the sustainability standards for banana cultivation. According to Rodríguez Pérez, the book includes information from certification systems, traceability and food security up to more concrete elements like the good use of health plan products and fertilizers, residues managing, work optimization, handling, watering, and general norms for its application.
