UK: Polytunnels approved on Finchampstead fruit farm

Plans have been approved for polytunnels on EU Plants' Finchampstead Farm in Berkshire, England. Locals opposed the construction of the tunnels, saying they would "ruin the view", but Slavey Slavchev, owner of the farm said that the land is for agricultural use and by building polytunnels, where he will propagate his soft fruit plants, he will in time employ as many as 20 additional people.

The planning application has cost Slavchev six months of production time. These are the first polytunnels to built on EU Plants' own land, until now they have rented land and polytunnels. Slavey explained that they have already invested a lot of money in the land by planting hedgerows and such to encourage nature.

The application was approved yesterday.

The firm plans to grow six million fruit plants on the site and the plastic tunnels will cover 2 ha.
