Great expectations for this campaign

Uruguay: Climate favors citrus

Uruguay has begun its citrus season successfully. "The harvest is going well, we have already begun with Satsumas and Clementines, following the first oranges (Navelinas) and Clemenvilla shortly. The outlook is very good due to the good weather we've had. Starting with a dry summer, then with good rains when it was needed so as to give good quality fruit that is being cultivated and waits to be harvested." comments Martin Calcagno of citrus company Caputto.

Currently, the climate is normal, for the geographical location of Caputto. "We see the beginning of the year in a positive way, at the moment we have very good thermal amplitude, with ideal temperatures during the day between 26°-28° and cool to cold nights, which helps the fruits develop a very good colour," assures Calcagno.

So far Caputto has not had any major problems due to pests. According to Martin, every year they face different types of pests, which is considered normal but noted that a dry summer benefits and favours a natural containment in the incidence of pests.

During last year's campaign, Calcagno said that for Caputto "The European crisis was extensive and as in any economy when there is a recession, it is felt in all the products." Given the difficult time in the European economy in 2011, Caputto managed to close the year with exports of approximately 45,000 tons.

During the citrus campaign, we are seeing an uptick in sales and by diversifying the final destinations for export and betting on new markets, Caputto hopes to have a very good season. Export prospects for him are of 65,000 tons.

The main varieties that are exported by Caputto are: mandarin (Okitsus and Owaris), Clementine (Marisol, Finas and Nules), Clemenvilla, Murcotts, Afourer, Ortaniques, Salteñitas, among others. As for the Oranges, the main varieties are Navelinas, Navels, Nave Late, Tully gold, lane late, NVL7, Valencias, Valencias midknight, Salustianas.

As Martin says "Today we export to almost everyone in the world." In Latin America they send citrus to Brazil, Europe mainly to Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Russia, and Scandinavian countries. Also they are sending their citrus to the Far and Middle East and Canada.

Calcagno commented to FreshPlaza that the U.S. is the market that Caputto would like to enter. "It is closer but it is just missing the final political push of our country to enter. Without a doubt our country can supply excellent quality to this market," says Martin.

Today, Caputto has over 5,000 hectares of citrus, which have a production of over 90,000 tons in all varieties (mandarins, oranges, lemons) produced from January to December. One of the new trends in the company is the incorporation of new plantations in the form of a lease. The company is on on the lookout for the
opening the American market to resume investment in the citrus sector with new plantings, enhancing also new varieties of citrus that the market demands today. It should be noted that besides having fresh fruit, Caputto is also engaged in the production of concentrated juice, essential oils, juices "Ready to Drink" and for 2 years now it has also been exporting cranberries.
