Carlos Cruzat, manager of the Kiwi Committee said, "in terms of production, we expect an increase of about 10% over the previous year, which means about 200,000 tons".
The representative clarified, that at the beginning of the Chilean season "there has been no rush to harvest the fruit", this is due to a market situation where the pressure in the Northern Hemisphere, mainly from Italy, "where lots of volume and small calibres, has caused prices to remain low" a situation, which according to Cruzat is expected to be replicated at least, "during the first part" of the Chilean kiwi season.
"The fruit is good in terms of condition and quality, however, the international market has a strong fruit pressure and we expect for it to go one month later than usual, "says the manager of the CDK.
On this scenario, the president of Fedefruta, Antonio Walker, states that "all these windows we had for kiwi increasing is falling. Today there is a Northern Hemisphere stock quite. We believe the market will rebound in the middle of the season and towards the last part, and that is why we must ensure a better fruit condition and quality care."
Faced with this, Walker stressed the importance of adhering to the Program of Quality and Maturity Assurance, that promotes the Kiwi Committee, in order to achieve a product that will stand the store longer.
