NL: Despite low prices low demand for onions

The situation on the onion market is continually bad. "Despite the low prices demand for onions is at a minimum" purchaser Willam Nannes of Beemsterboer from Warmenhuizen says. "Some onions go to countries like Brazil, Mauritania, Ivory Coast and the Eastern block, but all of them are small shipments."

The quality of the onions is not disappointing in many cases. It is becoming clear, however, that a group of growers, who traditionally keep their onions for a long time, now also start to get rid of their onions" William says. We are close to the end of April and then wear and tear symptoms appear, especially when the warmer weather starts playing a role."

"Last year we yearned for the new season because of the bad quality. This year mainly because of the bad market. The packing stations are without work, but there is no demand this year. This is a sign that sufficient onions are available," Nannes concludes.
