Joop Bonnet, A.C.Loogman & Zn BV:

"Import potatoes well received despite old harvest prices"

Despite the low prices of the old harvest Dutch potatoes, import potatoes are being well received by the market currently. This is according to Joop Bonnet of the Amsterdam potato trader A.C.Loogman & Zn BV. Presently the company import potatoes from Malta and Egypt and, next week expect the first Israeli potatoes. They hope to import potatoes from Portugal and Spain as well this year.

Field Marabel-potatoes in Portugal

"The harvest in Cyprus and Malta is a lot lower as a result of weather conditions. Because of this I expect 10,000 to 15,000 tons of potatoes less from Cyprus" the importer says. He visited the growing areas himself in Spain and Portugal over the last few weeks. "Especially in Portugal it was cold and these potatoes will arrive two weeks later, I expect. It was also cold in Spain, but that damage is quickly being caught up with."

Spanish Nicola's

"The import potatoes look beautiful up to now and because of the demand I am positive about the import season. Last year was a bad year, but I am optimistic that this year we will realise better prices" Joop says. Previously A.C.Loogman & Zn BV. often sold to third parties, at the moment mainly to retailers direct.
