Italy: Spain first destination for grapes from Racemus

Teresa Diomede (photo), manager at Racemus farm in Rutigliano (Bari, Italy) gives her opinion about this season's production and commercial activity.

Racemus sells on average about 1,800 tons of different aboriginal table grape varieties such as Italia, Palieri, Red Globe, Black Pearl, Victoria. By next wine harvest in 2012 another seedless white variety will be available, its name is Regal.

“Spain is the country where our grapes are sold most”, Teresa Diomede explains. “About 80% of the production reaches Iberian regions thanks to the partnership with a big Spanish group.”

“Other countries are the Czech Republic, Poland and France. A new challenge is represented by markets in Vietnam, Ile de la Reunion, Benin, Martinique, Madagascar where our production is really appreciated.”

“My farm holding”, Teresa explains, “produces and sells only table grapes, thus it is a bit early to talk about marketing and market situation. However, the result of the sales campaign in 2011 was satisfying: the product was excellent and the price has been quite constant from October on. We wish this situation could be the same in the next marketing campaign.”

“As far as field is concerned”, the owner of Racemus carries on, “grapes are at the bud burst time with visible clusters, while in the greenhouses along the coastline near Bari, Italy they are in their blossom time. Low temperatures recorded in the last few days slowed down the growing but without any serious inconvenience.”

“We know about the economic situation of different fruit and vegetable products which are causing difficulties on many farm holdings. We worry that there might be a similar difficulty in selling our table grapes, which may lead to a drop in price and will force our farmers to their knees.”

“We try to be optimist and confident, Teresa Diomede finishes, “taking care of the field production, which always has a high standard.”
